Hygge Holistic Mental Health
Welcome to Hygge (Hoo-Ga)! As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I offer medication management and psychotherapy with a special interest in neuroscience. Whether you’re feeling stuck and searching for mental health care for the first time or just looking for someone to manage your current therapies, I am here to support you with warmth and compassion. Please take a look around my site to get an understanding of my approach and the services I provide. If you think we’d be a good match, please “request a visit” and someone from Hygge will reach out to you.
“The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest in getting well.”
The Hygge Philosophy
Hygge (hoo-Ga) has been described as the Danish word for Zen and associated with a cozy sense of home. It comes from the Old Norse hugr (mind, soul) and Norwegian hugga (well-being). Personally, exploring my Scandinavian roots has felt like a homecoming, and I hope to help others find a sense of safety and comfort within themselves.
With a focus on neuroscience, I’m particularly interested in how painful memories are stored in our brains and bodies, triggering automatic responses to current life events. When unresolved, these wounds can cause depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, and even physical illness—what was once a protective response no longer serves us.
Talk therapy and cognitive approaches are valuable for identifying stuck patterns, but sometimes deeper work is needed to rewire the nervous system. Medication management alongside the therapies I practice help to break these cycles, restoring trust, safety, and peace—a return home to your own healing energy, creating hygge wherever you go.
About Me
I’m a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with over 20 years of nursing experience across emergency care, family medicine, maternal health, and inpatient psychiatry. As a nurse practitioner, I’m licensed to prescribe and manage mental health medications and offer psychotherapy through a holistic, trauma-informed lens, recognizing that we are complex individuals, not a diagnosis.
I work with patients ages 18-64, specializing in anxiety, depression, PTSD, perinatal and perimenopausal transitions, and supporting healthcare workers.
I’m a strong ally to LGBTQ and BIPOC communities and strive to create a safe space at Hygge for all, regardless of sexual identity, gender, race, or ethnicity. I offer a warm, compassionate environment and will always see you as the whole, worthy person you are.
Services and Methods
Initial Intake
The first visit typically lasts 60–90 minutes and offers a chance for us to slow down and really get to know each other. We'll explore what brings you in for treatment, your psychiatric and medical history, and the emotional, social, and environmental factors influencing your current state of health. This comprehensive, compassionate approach helps lay the foundation for thoughtful, personalized care moving forward.
Establishing an accurate diagnosis may take time and often evolves as we get to know each other. While a DSM-5 diagnosis is necessary for insurance purposes, it also helps guide our treatment by identifying the most effective, evidence-based approaches for your unique situation. Together, we’ll create a treatment plan that aligns with your personal goals, and we’ll continually assess and adjust it as needed to ensure it’s working for you.
Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
Medication Management
Sometimes we need a little extra support to get our head above water—or to stay afloat—so we can begin to take in the landscape of our lives and find our way forward. Medication can offer that stability, creating the space and clarity needed to implement coping strategies and engage in deeper healing work. I use evidence-based practice to guide medication choices, combining the highest quality research with my clinical expertise and your unique preferences. My approach is holistic, collaborative, and gentle—always honoring the whole person behind the symptoms.
Psychotherapy
I incorporate a variety of psychotherapy techniques to support and enhance medication management. My approach is personalized and collaborative—tailored to meet your specific needs, goals, and preferences. In addition to supportive psychotherapy, I have specialized training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), both of which offer powerful tools for healing emotional wounds and fostering lasting change.
With years of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) in maternity care coordination, along with additional lactation training, I have a deep understanding of both the beauty and challenges of new parenthood. The perinatal period is complex, profoundly shaping both individuals and family dynamics as parental roles evolve. Whether you are pregnant, contemplating pregnancy, or navigating the postpartum phase, my gentle and affirming approach is designed to meet you where you are and provide the support you need.
